本部分对应的视频课章节为第12章
1).        Many people say that they are working too many hours. They don’t have enough time to relax or to stay with their family. Work hours are different from one country to another. In France, people spend about 1,646 hours a year at work. In Japan, however, people work about 2,159 hours a year. That means a Japanese worker works 513 more hours a year that a French worker. Why do people work so many hours? Some people work extra hours because they want to make more money. However, many companies don’t pay overtimes. Their workers don’t get more money for more work. Some people think it’s their duty to work more hours. Some are afraid of losing their jobs if they don’t work more hours. Many people say that their vacations are too short. In France, people get five weeks of paid vacation a year. In Germany, they get four to six weeks, and in the United States, two weeks. One study shows fewer than half of workers used all their vacation days. In Great Britain, there is a saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a (dull) boy.” If that is true, there must be a lot of dull people in the world.

2).        Teachers say that the digital age has had a good influence and a not-so-good influence on American teenagers. More than 2,000 middle school teachers took an online survey. Researchers also spoke with teachers in some groups. Most teachers think the Internet and digital search tools have had a mostly positive influence on their students’ research habits and skills. But at the same time, some teachers also point out some problems in teenagers’ using digital search tools. The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the College Board and the National Writing Project. Judy Buchanan is the director of the National Writing Project and a co-writer of the report. She says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster. “Both teachers and students really welcome these tools because they make learning exciting. And the goal is to really help students become creators of something meaningful, and not just users of the online information.” But one problem the survey found is that these technologies make teenagers have short attention spans (持续时间). As there is lots of information about different subjects on the Internet, teenagers’ attention is easily drawn away from their research. Another problem the survey found is that many students trust the information they find on the Internet too much. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills to judge the online information. They need to learn a lot to tell if the information is believable. It’s something that really has to be paid attention to. One more problem the survey found is something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online. Many students think “doing research” now means just doing a quick search on Google. Teachers say the result is a drop in the wish and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. That is, they are depending too much on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research librarians. Many teachers also say that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

46.        Which one of the following is NOT TRUE about the survey?

A.         Teachers from different levels took part in the survey, including those from primary schools.
B.         The survey is carried out on the Internet.
C.         The survey involved different projects.
D.         The survey found no problems.

3).

There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don’t become popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let’s have a look at some of these inventions and see if you agree that they should be more successful.

The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol in their breath, the car wouldn’t start. It sounded like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He connected the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was produced by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal (踩动) very hard. I found another invention on the Internet which encouraged good habits. Believe it or not, this invention was an ashtray (烟灰缸) which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The “voice” of the ashtray was started by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke.

One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could (inflate) a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead? A friend of mine at school once bought a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs (转动钉垫). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated with you. The problem was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do “high fives” with you! Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these.

51.        What’s the writer’s attitude towards the inventions mentioned in Paragraph 2?

A.         The writer regrets he knew nothing about the inventions.
B.         he writer doubts if the inventions will be popular soon.
C.         The writer thinks these inventions will do good to people.
D.         The writer finds these inventions are the strangest of all.

5).

In order to lose weight, it is necessary to understand the importance of calories and how to calculate the amount of calories required for your body to lose weight. In weight loss, your diet plays 80% role for achieving the ideal results.

Most people take part in different weight loss programs with the hope of losing weight. However, have you ever stopped to ask yourself what helps people to lose weight? The simple answer is “calories you take in VS the calories you expend.” In order to calculate and burn the calories to lose weight, you need to understand what calories are.

_____________, calories are treated as the unit of energy that is got from food and drink. Your body cells need the calories to live properly and that is why you need to make sure that you meet your daily calorie intake. What you need to understand is that any food item that contains calories has the possibility to increase your energy intake. Now, people who don’t understand the importance of calories in the body, end up gaining or losing too much weight.

To be able to understand the dynamics (动态) of weight loss and weight gain, you need to understand what the calories are and what their role is in the body.

Calories as mentioned above are units of energy. They are the ones that provide the body with energy. However, the calories intake are directly linked to the energy outlet. This means that for you to be able to lose weight, the energy outlet needs to be higher than the calories intake. To gain weight, you need to keep a higher energy intake than the energy outlet. The opposite is true if you want to lose weight, you must burn more calories than those you take in.

61.        What plays the most important role in weight loss?

A.         The diet
B.         The weight
C.         The exercise
D.         The cost

7).

If a polar bear tells you to talk to the hand, don’t be surprised. The animals seem to communicate with each other through scent trails (气味痕迹) left by their paws. As they walk across the snowy Arctic, polar bears are usually alone. In the past, people noticed that polar bears sometimes smelled the footprints of other bears. Could there be chemical information hidden in their tracks?

Researchers gathered scent samples from the feet of 203 wild polar bears. All of the samples were taken in spring, when polar bears produce young. To get each bear’s scent, researchers rubbed a cotton cloth between its toes. Then they went to zoos and tested 28 zoo polar bears to see how they responded to the foot scents of strange bears. In case the toe clothes from the wild bears carried any disease, the researchers spread each scent sample onto a piece of cardboard and put it inside a little wooden box. The bears could smell and approach the boxes, but they couldn’t touch the samples directly.

In general, bears were more interested in foot scents from the opposite sex. They were more likely to approach the scent boxes in spring than in fall.

Judging by the zoo bears’ special interest in scents from the opposite sex, it seems that polar bears use foot smells to track down potential mates. By following a set of attractive footprints, a lonely polar bear can find itself a partner and make more polar bears. But this will only work as long as the sea ice that bears walk across is unbroken. The more it melts, the more bears’ trails will be incomplete. As a result, they will have no one’s feet to smell but their own.

71.

What’s the right order of the steps that researchers follow to study the communication between polar bears?

a. Rub a cotton cloth between each bear’s toes.

b. Go to zoos and test 28 zoo polar bears to see how they respond.

c. Write down the zoo bears’ responses and find out the reason accordingly.

d. Spread each scent sample onto a piece of cardboard and put it inside a box.

8).

Eating food is enjoyable, but cooking can be challenging. For those who don't have basic cooking skills, or are too busy working or traveling, one thing can save them: instant noodles.

This year marks the 61th anniversary of the invention of instant noodles. Ever since they were created by Japanese businessman Momofuku Ando in 1958, instant noodles have been popular around the world. In China, the product has almost become a necessity for those who travel by train.

There are some fun facts about instant noodles: The total length of the noodles in one package is 51 meters. The first instant noodles were considered a luxury product. When They first came to Japanese supermarket in 1958, they were 6 times the cost of fresh udon noodles. Japanese people even voted instant noodles as one of their best inventions of the 20th century.

For instant noodles, as well as many “instant” foods, convenience is the key selling point. They are supposed to make our lives easier.

. For example, in wars, soldiers eat compressed biscuits and canned meat because they don’t need to cook these foods. And in the 1960s, frozen dinners of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables became popular in the US. This is because more women started working and had no time to cook.

In recent years, however, online meal-ordering services have brought challenge to instant foods. Uber Eats is a popular app of this kind in the United States. In China, we have Elema, Dazhong Dianping and Meituan. These services offer not only convenience but also more choices and tastier food. According to the World Instant Noodle Association, instant noodle sales dropped by 17 percent in China as of 2016.

This might show that Chinese people are now more interested in having higher-quality diets and not just simply filling their bellies, experts say.

76.        Which country did instant noodles start from?

9).

In 1971 a young man who grew up very poor was traveling across the country, trying to make a new start for himself. Along the way he had completely run out of money and was forced to spend the night in his car. This continued until one morning, after a week of sleeping in his car, he walked nervously into a restaurant and ordered a big breakfast.

After eating his first good meal in weeks, he found himself lying to the waiter, telling him he had lost his wallet. The waiter, who was also the owner, walked behind the chair where they young man had been sitting. He bent down, and came up with a $20 bill that looked as if it had fallen on the floor and said, “Son, you must have dropped this,” the owner said. The young man couldn’t believe his luck! He quickly paid for the breakfast, left a tip, bought gas with the change. and headed West.

On the way out of town, he began to understand what that fellow did. Maybe nobody dropped the money at all. Maybe that fellow just knew I was in trouble and he helped me in a way that didn’t embarrass me. So I just made a promise to help other people if I can.

Later, he worked very hard and became a rich man. Now, he lives near Kansas City. Each year he gives away thousands of dollars. He is known as the “Secret Santa” because at Christmas time each year, he personally hands money out to those on the street and at restaurants. Last year. he gave more than $50,000 away in Kansas City.

10).

Think of the animal world. And a group of colorful/ wild animals will spring to mind: a parrots rainbow feathers or the showy scales of sea fish, but many mammals (哺乳动物) on the planet come in only two colors: black and white. Spend some time exploring what science has discovered about these animals’ appearance, and you’ll see that basic black and white isn't so basic at all.

Panda's white body helps it hide in snowy areas. The arms are black, helping it hide in forests. The markings on its head are not used to hide, but to communicate. Black ears can act as a warning to enemies.

Depending on the species, black skunks (臭鼬) may wear white spots that act as covering or white stripes that signal enemies to be aware of their smelly spray, which causes no real harm to its victims, but it makes them uncomfortable.

Zebras’ thin coats make them more vulnerable than long-haired animals to biting flies that carry disease, but the coats stripes prevent flies from landing on them, for reasons that scientists are still studying. Further, their attractiveness to flies increase with stripe width. No two zebras' stripes are exactly the same

11).

We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and there my wife saw the bookshelf.

It stood outside a furniture shop. “Buy it,” she said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof-rack (车顶架). I’ve always wanted one like that.”

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied onto the roof rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy too.

As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.

After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake (超车)?”

Just at that time a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously when they went past. But then, with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busy traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me.

“Right, sir,” he said. “Do you need any more help now?”

I didn’t quite understand. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You’ve been very kind. I live just down the road.”

He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf. “Well, well,” he said and laughed. “It’s a bookshelf you’ve got there! We thought it was-, er, something else.”

My wife began to laugh. Suddenly I understood why the police drove here. I smiled at the officer. “Yes, it’s a bookshelf, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could.

12).

Life comes in a package. This package includes happiness and sadness, failure and success, hope and despair. Life is a learning process. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day we learn to deal with various situations.

Love plays a main role in our life. Love makes you feel wanted. Without love a person could become cruel. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who show us with love and care. They teach us about what is right and wrong, good and bad. But we don’t always care about it. It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands others’ feelings.

Happiness can bring people a peaceful mind. No mind is happy without peace. Sadness is the cause of the death of a loved one or the failure. But all of these things will pass away.

Failure is the way to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings in money, pride and self-respect.

Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day.

Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is out of our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dark. So the only choice is to work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.
