三、Reading comprehension(共4题,每题10分,共40分)
试题1
【260862】        Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is "yes". To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with limited intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicate that environment as well as birth play a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.
1、 The writer is in favor of the view that man's intelligence is given to him _____.
A、 at birth
B、 both at birth and through education
C、 through education
D、 neither at birth nor through education
2、 If a child is born with low intelligence, he can _____.
A、 never become a genius
B、 exceed his intelligence limits in rich surroundings
C、 still become a genius if he should be given special education
D、 not reach his intelligence in his life
3、 In the second paragraph"if we take two unrelated people at random from the population"means if we _____.
A、 pick any two persons
B、 choose two persons who are relative
C、 take out two different persons
D、 choose two persons with different intelligence
4、 The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows _____.
A、 the importance of their intelligence
B、 the importance of their position
C、 the role of environment on intelligence
D、 the part that birth place
5、 The best title of this passage can be"_____".
A、 Intelligence
B、 Surroundings

试题2
【260869】        Adam Smith, writing in the 1770s,was the first person to see the importance of the division of labour and to explain part of its advantages. He gives us an example of the process by which pins were made in England.
"One man draws out the wire, another strengthens it,a third cuts it,a fourth points it,a fifth grinds it at the top to prepare it to receive the head.To make the head requires two or three distinct operations. To put it on is a separate operation,to polish the pins is another. And the important business of making pins is,in this manner, divided into about eighteen distinct operations, which in some factories are all performed by different people, though in others the same man will sometimes perform two or three of them."
Ten men, Smith said, in this way, turned out twelve pounds of pins a day or about 4, 800 pins apiece. But if all of them had worked separately and independently without division of labour, they certainly could not each of them have made twenty pins in a day and perhaps not even one.
There can be no doubt that division of labour is an efficient way of organizing work. Fewer people can make more pins. Adam Smith saw this but also took it for granted that division of labour is in itself responsible(负责任)for economic growth and development and that it accounts for the difference between expanding economies and those that stand still. But division of labour adds nothing new;it only enables people to produce more of what they already have.
1、 According to the passage, Adam Smith was the first person to _____.
A、 take advantage of the division of labour
B、 introduce the division of labour into England
C、 understand the effects of the division of labour
D、 explain the causes of the division of labour
2、 Adam Smith saw that the division of labour _____.
A、 enabled each worker to make pins more quickly and more cheaply
B、 increased the possible output per worker
C、 increased the number of people employed in factories
D、 improved the quality of pins produced
3、 Adam Smith mentioned the number 4, 800 in order to _____.
A、 show the advantages of the division of labour
B、 show the advantages of the old craft system
C、 emphasize(强调)how powerful the individual(个人的)worker was
D、 emphasize the importance of increased production
4、 According to the writer, Adam Smith's mistake was in believing that division of labour _____.
A、 was an efficient way of organizing work
B、 was an important development in methods of production
C、 led to economic development
D、 increased the production of existing goods
5、 Which of the following could serve as the best title for the passage? _____
A、 "Adam Smith, the English Economist".
B、 "The Theory of Division of Labour".
C、 "Division of Labour, an Efficient(有效的)Way of Organizing Work".
D、 "Adam Smith as the Discoverer of Division of Labour".
试题3
【260873】        Long bus rides are like televisions shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end--with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. "Buy Super Clean Toothpaste." "Drink Good'n Wet Root Beer." "Fill up with Pacific Gas." Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of "You Need It! Buy It Now!"
The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you've traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed--new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it's fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left-hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you've got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops.
The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there's a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you've sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the arm rests--even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at no more ways to sit.
1、 According to the passage, what do the passengers usually see when they are on a long bus trip? _____
A、 Buses on the road.
B、 Films on television.
C、 Advertisements on the board.
D、 Gas stations.
2、 What is the purpose of this passage? _____
A、 To give the writer's opinion about long bus trips.
B、 To persuade you to take a long bus trip.
C、 To explain how bus trips and television shows differ.
D、 To describe the billboards along the road.
3、 The writer of this passage would probably favor _____.
A、 bus drivers who weren't reckless
B、 driving alone
C、 a television set on the bus
D、 no billboards along the road
4、 The writer feels long bus rides are like TV shows because _____.
A、 the commercials both on TV shows and on billboards along the road are fun
B、 they both have a beginning, a middle, and an end, with commercials in between
C、 the drivers are always reckless on TV shows just as they are on buses
D、 both traveling and watching TV are not exciting
5、 The writer thinks that the end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning because both are _____.
A、 exciting
B、 comfortable
C、 tiring
D、 boring
试题4
【260874】        The journey two divers(潜水员)made some time ago to the very deepest point on the earth make us realize how much of the world still remains to be studied. The two men went down seven miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean inside a small ball to find out if there are any ocean currents(水流)or signs of life.
It was necessary to set out early, so that the ball would come to the surface in daylight, and so be easily found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it. The divers began preparations(准备)early in the morning and soon afterwards, when all was ready, the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water.
The divers felt as if they were going down steps as they passed through warm and cold layers(层)of water. In time, the temperature dropped to freezing point. They kept in touch with the mother ship by telephone telling how they felt. Then, at a depth(深度)of 3,000 feet, the telephone stopped working and they were quite cut off from the outside world. All went well until some four hours later at 30,000 feet, the men were frightened by a loud, cracking(爆裂)noise: even the smallest hole in the ball would have meant instant death. Luckily, though, it was only one of the outer(外部的)windows that had broken. Soon afterwards, the ball touched the soft ocean floor raising a big cloud of "dust" made up of small dead sea-creatures. Here, powerful lights lit up the dark water and the men were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quite untroubled by the great water pressure(压力). But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long , as the heat from them made the water boil. Quite unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the faint(微弱的)but clear voices of the divers were heard on the mother ship seven miles away. After a stay of thirty minutes the men began their journey up, arriving three hours later, cold and wet through, but none the worse for their experience.
1、 The purpose of the diver's journey to the deepest point on the earth was to find _____.
A、 if there are water currents and life in the great depths
B、 if people can stand the severe cold in the great depths
C、 if there are steps in the great depths
D、 if the telephone works well in the great depths
2、 The divers set out early in the morning so that _____.
A、 they could return to the surface during the day
B、 they could see at the bottom of the ocean
C、 they could avoid the cold at night
D、 they could stay long at the bottom
3、 Which of the following statements is true?
A、 The ocean water temperature decreases steadily with the depth
B、 There are steps on the way to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean
C、 There are steps between the water layers of different temperature
D、 The water layers of different temperatures made the divers feel as if they were going down steps
4、 As the divers went down to the ocean floor, the telephone _____.
A、 kept working all the time
B、 stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again after they reached the bottom
C、 stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working at 30,000 feet
D、 stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again when they returned to the same depth
5、 On the ocean floor, the divers found that _____.
A、 there was no life but some small dead sea-creatures
B、 fish were swimming as freely as they do near the surface
C、 fish were not swimming freely in the dark water
D、 fish were not swimming freely under the high water pressure
