The word“day”has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using“day”to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using“day”to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning(旋转)of the earth. At the equator(赤道)day and night are sometimes the same length(长度). They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o’clock in the morning and sets at 6 o’clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted(倾斜)toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere(半球)gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.

1、When the Western Hemisphere is having day, the Eastern Hemisphere is having ________.
A、both day and night
B、day
C、neither day nor night
D、night

2、A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by ________ of the earth.

A、sometimes
B、never
C、usually
D、always

4、When the North Pole is tilted toward the sun, the Northern Hemisphere gets ________ sunlight.
A、less
B、more
C、all
D、no

5、When it is winter in China, ________.
A、the USA is tilted toward the sun
B、the South Pole is tilted away from the sun
C、the North Pole is tilted toward the sun
D、the North Pole is tilted away from the sun

It came as something of a surprise when Diana, Princess of Wales, made a trip to Angola in 2004, to support the Red Cross's campaign for a total ban on all anti-personnel landmines(地雷). Within hours of arriving in Angola, television screens around the world were filled with images of her comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines. "I knew the statistics," she said. "But putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me; like when I met Sandra, a 13- year-old girl who had lost her leg, and people like her."
The Princess concluded with a simple message: "We must stop landmines". And she used every opportunity during her visit to repeat this message.
But, back in London, her views were not shared by some members of the British government, which refused to support a ban on these weapons. Angry politicians launched an attack on the Princess in the press. They described her as "very ill-informed" and a "loose cannon (乱放炮的人).”
The Princess responded by brushing aside the criticisms: "This is a distraction  we do not need. All I'm trying to do is help."
Opposition parties, the media and the public immediately voiced their support for the Princess. To make matters worse for the government, it soon emerged that the Princess's trip had been approved by the Foreign Office, and that she was in fact very well-informed about both the situation in Angola and the British government's policy regarding landmines. The result was a severe embarrassment for the government.
To try and limit the damage, the Foreign Secretary, Malcolm Rifkidnd, claimed that the Princess's views on landmines were not very different from government policy, and that it was "working towards" a worldwide ban. The Defence Secretary, Michael Portillo, claimed the matter was "a misinterpretation or misunderstanding."
For the Princess, the trip to this war-torn country was an excellent opportunity to use her popularity to show the world how much destruction and suffering landmines can cause. She said that the experience had also given her the chance to get closer to people and their problems.

1、Princess Diana paid a visit to Angola in 2004________ .
A、to voice her support for a total ban of landmines
B、to clarify the British government's stand on landmines
C、to investigate the sufferings of landmine victims there
D、to establish her image as a friend of landmine victims

2、What did Diana mean when she said "... putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me" (Line 5, Para.1)?
A、She just couldn't bear to meet the landmine victims face to face.
B、The actual situation in Angola made her feel like going back home.
C、Meeting the landmine victims in person made her believe the statistics.
D、Seeing the pain of the victims made her realize the seriousness of the situation.

3、Some members of the British government criticized Diana because_________ .
A、she was ill-informed of the government's policy
B、they were actually opposed to banning landmines
C、she had not consulted the government before the visit
D、they believed that she had misinterpreted the situation in Angola

4、How did Diana respond to the criticisms?
A、She paid no attention to them.
B、She made more appearances on TV.
C、She met the 13-year-old girl as planned.
D、She rose to argue with her opponents.

5、What did Princess Diana think of her visit to Angola?
A、It had caused embarrassment to the British government.
B、It had brought her closer to the ordinary people.
C、It had greatly promoted her popularity.
D、It had affected her relations with the British government.

Our surroundings are being polluted faster than ever and it seems that people cannot prevent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry, more cars, larger cities, and the growing use of man-made materials.
What can explain and settle this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man—by his desire(欲望) for a modern way of life. We make "increasing industrialization"(工业化) our first aim. So we are often ready to offer everything: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from the country-side into the cities, eager for the achievements of our modern society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem.
Isn't it time we stopped to ask ourselves where we are going—and why? It makes one think of the story about the pilot (飞行员) who told his passengers over the loudspeaker : "I've some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we 're making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we are lost and don't know where we're going." The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when speaking of our modern society.

1、Man cannot prevent the world from being polluted because _______.
A、the population of the world is increasing faster
B、people use too many man-made materials
C、we have more industry
D、we are producing more cars, trucks and buses

2、According to the passage, what does man care most among the following?
A、Health.
B、Industry.
C、Clean air
D、The future of the children

3、In modern society, people tend to _______.
A、move from countryside to cites
B、move from cities to countryside
C、stay in where they live
D、find their own place to live

4、The story about the pilot tells us that _______.
A、man knows where the society is going
B、people don't welcome the rapid development of modern society
C、man can do little about the problem of pollution
D、the speaker is worried about the future of our society

5、What dose the writer really want to say in the passage?
A、With the development of technology, pollution has become a serious problem.
B、We should control the speed of the development to stop pollution.
C、It's time we did something to reduce pollution.
D、As industry is growing fast, pollution is the natural result.

Fred, a close friend of mine, lives with six hundred wild animals on a small island. Ever since he left school, where I first knew him, he has traveled all over Africa collect¬ing (收集) animals for his zoo. He hoped to collect at least two animals of each kind on his island, like Noah before the Great Flood (洪水). But the flood that my friend was afraid of was a flood not of water, hut of people. I expect you have heard of my friend; he writes books about his travels, and about the wild and wonderful animals that he collects. The money from the books helps to pay for all the food that those animals eat.

American society is not nap (午睡) friendly. In fact, says David Dinges, a sleep specialist at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. "There's even a prohibition against admitting we need sleep". Nobody wants to be caught napping or found asleep at work. To quote a proverb: "Some sleep five hours, nature requires seven, laziness nine and wickedness eleven."
Wrong. The way not to fall asleep at work is to take naps when you need them. "We have to totally change our attitude toward napping", says Dr. William Dement of Stanford University, the godfather of sleep research.
Last year a national commission led by Dement identified an "American sleep debt" which one member said was as important as the national debt. The commission was concerned about the dangers of sleepiness: people causing industrial accidents or falling asleep while driving. This may be why we have a new sleep policy in the White House. According to recent reports, president Clinton is trying to take a half hour snooze (打瞌睡) every afternoon.
About 60 percent of American adults nap when given the opportunity. We seem to have a mid-afternoon quiet phase also called" a secondary sleep gate." Sleeping 15 minutes to two hours in the early afternoon can reduce stress and make us refreshed. Clearly, we were born to nap.
We Superstars of Snooze don't nap to replace lost shut eye or to prepare for a night shift. Rather, we “snack”on sleep, whenever, wherever and at whatever time we feel like it. I myself have napped in buses, cars, planes and on boats; on floors and beds; and in libraries, offices and museums.

A、unreasonable
B、criminal
C、harmful
D、costly

A、don't like to take naps
B、are terribly worried about their national debt
C、sleep less than is good for them
D、have caused many industrial and traffic accidents

3、The purpose of this article is to ______.
A、warn us of the wickedness of napping
B、explain the danger of sleepiness
C、discuss the side effects of napping
D、convince the reader of the necessity of napping

4、The “American sleep debt” (Line 1, Para. 3) is the result of ______.
A、the traditional misconception the Americans have about sleep
B、the new sleep policy of the Clinton Administration
C、the rapid development of American industry
D、the Americans' worry about the danger of sleepiness

5、The second sentence of the last paragraph tells us that it is ______.
A、preferable to have a sound sleep before a night shift
B、good practice to eat something light before we go to bed
C、essential to make up for cost sleep
D、natural to take a nap whenever we feel the need for it
