All the useful energy at the surface of the earth comes from the activities of the sun. The sun heats and feeds mankind. Each year it provides men with two hundred million tons of grain and nearly ten million tons of wood.
Coal, oil, natural gas, and all the other fuels are stored-up energy from the sun. Some was collected by this season’s plants as carbon compounds. Some was stored by plants and trees ages ago.
Even waterpower derives from the sun. Water turned into vapor by the sun falls as rain. It courses down the mountains and is converted to electric power.
Light transmits only the energy that comes from the sun’s outer layers, and much of this energy that is directed toward the earth never arrives. About nine-tenths of it is absorbed by the atmosphere of the earth. In fact, the earth itself gets only one half-billionth of the sun’s entire output of radiant energy.
21.        All the useful energy at the surface of the earth comes______.
A. directly from the sun                                        B. from the sun’s activity

When the summer is come you go to a lake or a sea. When you are near a lake or a sea,you feel cool. Why? The sun makes the earth hot, but it cannot make the water very hot.Although the air over the earth becomes hot,the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth goes up.Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When you are near a lake or a sea,you feel the cool air when it moves in.You feel the wind. And the wind makes you feel cool.
Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask,“why is the sea full of salt” Scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When  rock gets very hot or very cold,it cracks.Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the sea.But then we ask, “What happens to the salt in the sea? The sea does not get more salty every year.” Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question.
We know a lot about our world. But there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious.Scientists are doing more researches and we are asking more questions.

Most schools in England take football seriously--much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all that are important and games are left for children themselves. In England.it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy’s mind with facts in the classroom, but also means the training of character and one of the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games, where the boy or girl has to learn to work with others for his team, instead of working for himself alone. The school therefore plans games and matches for its pupils.Football is a good team game; it is a good both for the body and the mind. That is why it is every school’s game in England.

Nowadays many people do not need to carry money in their pocket when they travel all over the world. Is life easier when people don't need to carry any coins for currency at all? Is money heavy to carry? Is it safe to carry money? Maybe in the future each of us will have only one small plastic credit card.We will use it to buy all the things we now buy with money. We will not need money to pay for things.
Surely we may still have some of the same problems with cards that we now have with money.Sometimes we lose money.Maybe we will lose the cards.People steal money.Maybe some one will take the card.Someone may even make a card that looks like our card. Since we cannot buy anything without our cards, the credit card may be no better than currency.
Is there something even easier to use than credit cards? All of us have a thumbprint. No two thumbprints are the same.Maybe someday the government will keep people’s thumbprints with a number. No person will have the same thumbprint or number. When you want to buy something you will put your thumb on a machine or a computer. Each store or business will have one.Everyone’s thumbprint will be in the computer. It will be very difficult to lose our  thumbprints. It will be very hard for someone to steal it or make one like it.
