He is a good observer, accurate, patient and objective and applies persistent and logical thought to the observations he makes. He utilizes the facts he observes to the fullest extent. For example, trained observes obtain a very large amount of information about a star (e.g. distance, mass, size, rate of movement etc.) mainly from the accurate analysis of the simple lines that appear in a spectrum (光谱).
He is skeptical (怀疑的) and he does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available – and therefore rejects authority as the sole basis for truth. Scientists always check statements and make experiments carefully and objectively to prove them.
Furthermore, he is not only critical of the work of others, but also of his own, since he knows that man is the least reliable of scientific instruments and that a number of factors tend to disturb objective investigation.
Lastly, he is highly imaginative since he often has to look for relationships in data which are not only complex but also frequently incomplete. Furthermore, he needs imagination if he wants to make hypotheses(假设)of how processes work and how events take place.
These seem to be some of the ways in which a successful scientist thinks and acts.

At sixteen Ron Mackie might have stayed at school, but the future called to him excitedly. “Get out of the classroom into a job.” It said and Ron obeyed. His father, supporting the decision, found a place for him in a supermarket. “You’re lucky, Ron, “he said. “ For every boy with a job these days, there’s a dozen with-out.” So Ron joined the working world at twenty pounds a week.
For a year he spent his days filling shelves with tins of food. By the end of that time he was looking back on his school days as a time of great variety and satisfaction. He searched for an interest in his work, with little success.
One fine day instead of going to work Ron got a lift on a lorry going south. With nine pounds in his pocket, a full heart and a great longing for the sea, he set out to make a better way for himself. That evening, in Bournemouth, he had a sandwich and a drink in a café run by an elderly man and his wife. Before he had finished the sandwich, the woman had taken him on for the rest of the summer, at twenty pounds a week, a room upstairs and three meals a day. The ease and speed of it rather took Ron’s breath away. At quiet times, Ron had to check the old man’s arithmetic in the records of the business.
At the end of the season, he stayed on the coast. He was again surprised how straightforward it was for a boy of seventeen to make a living. He worked in shops mostly, but once he took a job in a hotel for three weeks. Late in October he was taken on by the sick manager of a shoe shop.

Why was Bastille important to the citizens of Paris? The building of the Bastille had been started in 1370 under Charles V. By the seventeenth century it had stopped to be important for defense. Cardinal Richelieu turned it into a prison. It was not an ordinary prison to punish common crimes. Its huge doors closed only on enemies of the King. The Bastille’s workings were secret. Prisoners were taken to it in closed vehicles. Soldiers on guard duty had to stand with their faces to the wall. No talking was allowed. Worst of all, a prisoner never knew if he would be there a day, a week, a year, or forever. Only the King’s letter could set him free.
Over the years the number of arrests by King’s letter had become fewer. By the time of its fall, most of the prisoners were writers who had written against the corruptions (贪污腐败) of the government. Voltaire, the famous French writer, spent a year there in 1717-1718, and another 12 days in 1726.

An earthquake is caused by a sudden on a fault(断层). A fault is a fracture in the crust(地壳) of the earth along which rocks on one side have moved relative to those on the other side. Stresses in the earth’s outer layer push the side of the fault together, build up and the rocks slips suddenly, releasing energy in waves that travel though the rock to cause to cause the shaking that we feel during an earthquake.
Earthquakes tend to be concentrated in narrow zones. There are 7 major crustal plates on earth, about 80 km thick, all in constant motion relative to one another. They move at between 10 and 130 mm per year.

Many of these earthquakes go undetected because they occur in the remote areas or have very small magnitudes(震级).
