阅读理解 单选题 完型填空

一、阅读理解(共 4 道试题,共 40 分。)V 1.  We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?" "When I got that great job, did Jerry really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it's too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends--or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "you're a lucky dog". Is he really on your side? If he says, "You're a lucky guy" or "You're a lucky gal", that's being friendly. But "lucky dog"? There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the "dog" bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn't think you deserve your luck.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says square with the tone of voice? His posture (体态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

1). From the questions in the first paragraph we can learn that the writer ______.
A. feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to him

B. feels he may not have "read" his friends' true feelings correctly

C. thinks it was a mistake to have broken up with his girl friend, Helen

D. is sorry that his friends let him down

B. this saying means the same as "You're a lucky guy" or "You're a lucky gal"

C. sometimes the words used by a speaker give a clue to the feeling behind the words

D. the word "dog" shouldn't be used to apply to people
      谋学网:2  分
3). This passage tries to tell you how to ______.

2.  For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world’s greatest dramatist (剧作家). Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him: that of William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the work of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property of the English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we used, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations.
Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, makes full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal use of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand.
There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not, of course, recommended to beginners) even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.

1). English people _______.
A. have never discussed who is the world’s greatest dramatist
B. never discuss any issue concerning the world’s greatest dramatist

C. are sure who is the world’s greatest dramatist

D. do not care who is the world’s greatest poet and dramatist
      谋学网:2  分
2). Every Englishman knows _______.
A. more or less about Shakespeare
B. Shakespeare, but only slightly

C. all Shakespeare’s writings

D. only the name of the greatest English writer
      谋学网:2  分
3). Which of the following is true?
A. We use all the words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings.
B. Shakespeare’s writings have become the property of those who are learning to speak English.

C.  It is likely to be true that people often do not know the origins of the words they use

D.  All the words people use are taken from the writings of Shakespeare.
      谋学网:2  分
4). What does the word “proverb” mean?
A. Familiar sayings.
B. Shakespeare’s plays.

C. Complaints.
D. Actors and actresses.
      谋学网:2  分
5). Why is it worthwhile to study the various ways in which Shakespeare used English?
A. English words have changed a lot since Shakespeare’s time.
B. By doing so one can be fully aware of the richness of the English language.

C. English words are now being used in the same way as in Shakespeare’s time.
D. Beginners may have difficulty learning some aspects of English usage.

3.  Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard (无意中听到) our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

4.  The appeal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects. Consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers have appealed to people’s desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve gasoline mileage. Some of the products work. Others are worthless and a waste of consumers’ money.
Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading. A few years ago a brand of bread was offered to dieters(节食者)with the message that there were fewer calories(热量单位,大卡)in every slice. It turned out that the bread was not dietetic(适合于节食的), but just regular bread. There were fewer calories because it was sliced very thin, but there were the same number of calories in every loaf.
On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer’s real concerns. Consider fire insurance. Fire security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurance a worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance plans as well as the message in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising.
Each consumer must evaluate her or his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it? Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product. Consumers still control the final buying decision.

      谋学网:2  分
3). The passage tells us that _______.
